What a status page is for

3 min readpublished 2026-08-16

01The short answer#

A status page is a public page that shows whether your service is working, with its uptime history and any ongoing incident. When something breaks, customers check it instead of filling your inbox, and when nothing is broken, it tells them the problem is on their side.

It only works if people trust it. A page that says "all systems operational" during an outage is worse than no page, and a page someone has to update by hand is always late.

A public status page for tidvatten.app: four components, each with 24 hours of uptime bars and an uptime figure from 99.87% to 100%
A public status page: one row per component, 24 hours of checks, uptime on the right. Sample data.

02What makes one worth trusting#

  • It updates itself from real checks, not from someone remembering to post.
  • It shows history, so a clean month actually means something.
  • It never guesses. "We couldn't measure" is not the same as "down".
  • It runs somewhere else, so it stays up when you don't.

03Status pages in UpControl#

Type your URL on upcontrol.io and a public status page exists at /status/<your-site> in one click, free, with no account. Real checks feed it, it shows uptime bars and incidents, and it never calls something down that it couldn't measure.

Claim it to add alerts, and on a paid plan put it on your own subdomain with a CNAME. Because it runs on our servers, not yours, it stays up when your site doesn't, which is the one moment it matters.
