The pitch
StatusPage.io (Atlassian) built the category: a hosted page where customers check whether your service is down. It does one thing and bills accordingly, starting around $29/month with no free tier, and it does not include the monitoring: you need something else to know your site is down before the page says so. This post is for the small team that wants the status page and the checks in one purchase, or in one free tier. UpControl is a monitoring tool where the public status page is a first-class part: one click, free, and it already carries the uptime history your checks measured.

Where UpControl is better
- The page is free, and it starts itself. Type a domain on the UpControl landing and the public page exists from that moment at upcontrol.io/status/your-site, with components, incidents and measured uptime. You do not even need an account; the site's owner can claim it later. StatusPage.io starts at a paid plan for a page.
- Checks included. The thing that updates the page is in the box: website checks every minute, SSL and domain expiry, heartbeats for cron jobs. On StatusPage.io you subscribe to a monitor separately and wire it in.
- The "why" rides along. Incidents on the page come from checks that correlate with your logs and deploys, so the postmortem writes itself.
- Prices. Free tier, then $9/month annual. A custom domain on your status page is a paid feature, but the page itself is free forever, and the credit line stays.
- Self-host the same product. AGPL-3.0, one compose file, zero telemetry in the OSS build. Your status page can literally run on the box it reports on.
Where StatusPage.io is better
- Enterprise muscle. Atlassian SSO, subscription management for page followers, email and SMS subscriptions at scale, metrics with historical graphs designed for large audiences.
- A decade of being the default. Customers know the layout, templates are battle-tested, the brand itself reassures enterprise buyers.
- Scale pricing makes sense in reverse: at thousands of followers the per-follower machinery is real work we do not do.
For a five-person SaaS, paying $29/month for a page that a separate product has to feed is paying twice for one fact.

- Claim it to move it into your account, add the components you publish.
