Datadog alternative for a small product: uptime, logs and product events on a flat plan

The pitch

Datadog does almost everything, and it is priced and configured for teams that need almost everything. This post is for a founder or a small team with one product. UpControl answers three questions about that product: is it up, why did it break, and what are users doing. A coding agent sets it up with one npx command.

Where UpControl is better

  • A bill you can predict. Plans are flat: Free, Indie at $11 a month, Growth at $24, Agency at $49. A traffic spike does not change the invoice.
  • The why on one page. An incident carries the log lines and the deploy around the failure. You do not build a dashboard to get there.
  • Your coding agent sets it up. Run npx upcontrol, then ask in plain words: "track my users from first visit to purchase".
  • A public status page for every site, free, from the moment you type the domain.
  • The same product self-hosted: AGPL-3.0, one compose file, a 1 GB box, zero telemetry.
A public status page for tidvatten.app: four components, each with 24 hours of uptime bars and an uptime figure from 99.87% to 100%
A public status page: one row per component, 24 hours of checks, uptime on the right. Sample data.

Where Datadog is better

  • APM, tracing and infrastructure metrics. UpControl has none of these. If you need to know which query made a request slow, stay with Datadog.
  • Scale and integrations: hundreds of them, and years of work on large fleets.
  • On-call. UpControl sends alerts to Telegram, Slack, Discord and email, and has no rotations or phone escalation.
  • Synthetic tests from locations you choose.

If two of these are daily needs, this is the wrong post for you.

Try it next to Datadog

  1. Open upcontrol.io and type your domain. A check and a public status page exist from that moment.
  2. Run npx upcontrol in your repo and tell your agent what to log and which events to track.
  3. Add a heartbeat for each scheduled job, and pick where alerts go.

Type a domain on upcontrol.io and press Check. The status page exists from that moment.
