Robusta alternative: incident context without the Kubernetes requirement

4 min read ยท published 2026-09-29

The pitch

Robusta is Kubernetes incident monitoring: a runner you install in-cluster with Helm, which takes your Prometheus and Alertmanager alerts, enriches them with pod logs and cluster context, and delivers them to Slack, Teams and other channels. If your whole world runs in one cluster, it is a good tool for that world. This post is for the team that also watches things outside it: a marketing site, a worker on a small VM, an API customers call from anywhere. UpControl puts uptime checks, heartbeats, application logs and product events on one incident page, and a coding agent does the wiring with one npx command. The table and the two lists below are the whole argument; the last section is the five-minute move.

Where UpControl is better

  • The "why", not just "down". Robusta enriches a Prometheus alert with what the cluster knew. UpControl correlates the check with your application logs and product events, so the incident page carries the log lines around the failure and the deploy that landed before it. A probe blocked by a firewall or bot protection is recorded as "couldn't measure", never counted against your uptime number.
  • Your coding agent does the wiring. Run npx upcontrol and the agent you already use (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI, Copilot, Windsurf, Amp, Aider, Cline or opencode) sets up logging and events. Ask it to track signups from first visit to purchase, and the funnel is on the dashboard. No tracking code written by hand.
  • Nothing has to run in Kubernetes. A check watches any URL, a heartbeat watches any cron job or background worker on any machine, and both land in the same timeline. The self-hosted core runs from one compose file on a GB-class box, no cluster in sight, and the OSS build sends no telemetry home.
  • Product events next to uptime. Funnels, retention grids and A/B tests built from your own events, on the same boards as the checks. Robusta has no answer for whether the release changed what users do, because it never sees your product.
  • A status page from the first minute, free. Type a domain on the landing page and a public status page for that host exists, with components, incidents and uptime history; the owner claims it with one click. No Helm chart, no account.

Where Robusta is better

  • Kubernetes depth. The runner sits inside the cluster, so an alert arrives with pod logs, events and images pulled from the place the problem happened. UpControl reads nothing inside a cluster; it watches what answers over HTTP and what phones home on schedule.
  • Alertmanager plumbing. Prometheus and Alertmanager routing, silence handling and a long list of delivery channels, built for that world. We do not ingest Prometheus alerts at all; if Alertmanager already fires the alerts you care about, Robusta is the natural fit.
  • Automated playbooks. Robusta can run actions when alerts fire, such as restarting pods or running a script. We alert and explain; we take no action on your infrastructure.

If every service you care about runs in the cluster and Prometheus already fires the alerts, Robusta is the right shape, and this post is not written to move you. The rest is for the team whose watching goes past the cluster boundary.

Switching from Robusta in five minutes

  1. Open upcontrol.io and type your domain. The public status page exists from that moment.
  2. Claim the page from its link to move it into your account.
  3. Add HTTP checks for the URLs your Robusta uptime monitors covered, and a heartbeat for each cron job or background worker outside the cluster: a private URL the job pings on schedule, where a miss opens an incident.
  4. Pick Telegram or email alerts; Slack and Discord are there too.
  5. Optional, for the reason behind the next incident: run npx upcontrol in your repo and tell your agent what to log and which events to track.
